There are at least 240 billion pennies lying around in the US, making it the most produced coin in the history of human civilization. But that figure is just a fraction of the total amount of pennies minted since 1793, per New York Times Magazine writer Caity Weaver, meaning most are missing or just in the same place as all your misplaced pens.

25 Simple Tips to Make Your Life Healthier
Making major changes to your life can sometimes seem very overwhelming. It may be more manageable to start with just one thing — like eating more of your favorite fruit — rather than all of them at once.
Why You Should Throw Out Your Plastic Cutting Boards
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pervasive presence of microplastics, you're not alone. These tiny pollutants are infiltrating nearly every aspect of our lives—spanning from pristine Polar regions to our own kitchens, and even entering our bodies. The reality is stark: microplastics are everywhere. Recent studies suggest that a significant portion of our microplastic exposure comes from the food we eat, with common kitchen items such as ice trays, dishwasher pods, food storage containers, and cutting boards being major culprits.
One recent investigation focused on the microplastic emissions from cutting boards. Given that these plastic boards endure daily use and constant chopping, it’s crucial to understand the potential risks. Microplastics, defined as plastic particles less than five millimeters in diameter (about the size of a pencil eraser), can be even smaller and are often invisible to the naked eye. These particles pose a grave concern because they can take hundreds to thousands of years to decompose fully.
Our daily consumption of microplastics is alarming. They’re found in seafood, drinking water, beer, and even table salt. Cutting boards contribute directly to this issue. Each time we use them, the knife blade wears down the plastic surface, potentially introducing microplastics into our food. Numerous knife marks on these boards bear evidence of this contamination. Consequently, researchers have examined how much plastic actually transfers from the cutting board to the food we consume.
While replacing one or two plastic cutting boards may seem like a small change, it’s important to recognize that this alone may not drastically reduce our overall exposure to microplastics. However, making this switch in combination with other changes—such as replacing plastic Tupperware with glass containers—can be a meaningful step towards improving our health and safety. Opting for alternatives like wooden, bamboo, glass, or stone cutting boards can offer some peace of mind. Every small action contributes to a larger effort in safeguarding our health and protecting our environment from the pervasive threat of microplastics.
