New London Road/South Washington Boulevard/Elmwood Road intersection meeting tonight !
Hey there fellow parents with school-aged kids,
I wanted to share some news about a situation that's been brewing in our neighborhood. So, there's this thing called the Hamilton Traffic Commission, and they're planning to have a big meeting next Tuesday. What's all the fuss about, you ask? Well, it's about a fancy word called a "roundabout," and it's got some folks in our town saying "yay" and others saying "nay." The city is also trying to find a quick fix until they have enough money to make this roundabout thing happen.
Now, let me break it down for you. In the future, they want to put this roundabout at the spot where New London Road, South Washington Boulevard, and Elmwood Road all come together. But guess what? They need a $3 million grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation to make it a reality. The catch is that they have to apply for this grant by March, but they won't even start building it until 2027. That's a long time to wait, right?
So, our city's traffic experts have another idea in the meantime. They want to put up something temporary. But here's the thing, there are some people who like the idea of a roundabout, and there are others who think a regular old traffic light is the way to go. It's a bit of a pickle, as they say.
But here's some good news. There's a meeting happening on Tuesday at 6 p.m. over at City Council Chambers on High St. They want to hear what we parents have to say about the safety of that busy intersection. You see, there have been complaints about accidents there since 2021, and a bunch of experts looked into it. They found that there were too many crashes on South Washington and a lot of delays. One of them even said it's because you can't see properly when you're trying to turn onto New London from South Washington.
Now, New London Road is a pretty busy street, especially for us parents driving our kids to Hamilton Badin High School. It's also how we get to the western parts of Butler County. On the other hand, South Washington Boulevard and Elmwood Road are those cozy streets in our neighborhood.
Since it'll be a few years before they can make the big changes and we won't even know if they got that grant until September, they need something to keep us all safe in the meantime. And it looks like they're leaning towards putting up a traffic light.
