Animal Friends Humane Society (AFHS) was established in 1952 and is Butler County’s largest, oldest non-profit animal shelter. Our mission is to promote humane principles, to protect lost, homeless, abandoned and mistreated animals, and to act as advocates for animals in our communities. In 2009, AFHS relocated from its outdated facility in Trenton and now occupies a 22,500 sq. foot facility with top-notch amenities for its shelter population in Hamilton, Ohio. By adopting nationally recognized best practices for animal shelters, AFHS has been successful in maintaining high live release rates and is committed to providing individual care to local pets in need. Your support helps the more than 5,000 animals that enter our doors each year.

At Miami University Middletown, we are thrilled to share the inspiring journey of Cheryl Miller, our former assistant and head women's basketball coach. As she gears up for her well-deserved induction into the MUM Athletic Hall of Fame, it's essential to recognize that her coaching legacy extends far beyond the wins and losses on the scoreboard.

Throughout her remarkable career from 1983 to 2004, Coach Miller achieved a winning record of 217 wins, 143 losses, clinching five Ohio Regional Campus Conference championships and four state championships. Yet, these numbers only scratch the surface of her impact. Coach Miller's influence transcends statistics; she touched the lives of hundreds of individuals during her nearly 40-year coaching and athletic director career at MUM, including her years coaching middle school basketball.

One of Coach Miller's former players and assistant coach, Sharon Brunk, speaks of her with admiration, emphasizing her integrity and genuine care for each player as part of the family. Coach Miller remained consistent in her character, whether celebrating a state title victory or facing a challenging season. Her goal was always centered on improving her players both on and off the basketball court, fostering an environment where athletes could enjoy their journey, regardless of the outcome.

Jim Sliger, former women's basketball coach and athletic director at MUM, highlights the dynamic partnership he shared with Coach Miller. He describes her as a "wonderful blessing" to MUM, emphasizing her commitment to treating people well and prioritizing the development of students. Coach Miller's focus extended beyond the game; she aimed to impart valuable life lessons to her players, emphasizing the importance of doing what's right and avoiding the spotlight.

Coach Cheryl Ann Miller, now at 73, remains modest about her impending induction into the MUM Athletic Hall of Fame. She credits her success to the players she coached and downplays her own contributions. Graduating from Preble Shawnee High School in 1968 and earning her bachelor's degree from Eastern Kentucky University, she dedicated her life to education, retiring as athletic director at MUM in 2022 after a 50-year career.

As we celebrate Coach Miller's induction into the MUM Athletic Hall of Fame on January 27, let's acknowledge not only her impressive coaching record but also her enduring impact on the lives she touched. Cheryl Miller's coaching legacy goes far beyond the basketball court, leaving an indelible mark on our community and embodying the spirit of leadership we can all aspire to emulate.

If you're interested in attending the induction ceremony and honoring Coach Miller, tickets are available at the Middletown Athletic Office or by contacting Abby Cramer at [email protected]. Let's come together to celebrate the achievements of a true legend in our MUM community!

Get ready, baseball fans, because the Cincinnati Reds Caravan is hitting the road again, making a crucial stop at the nation's largest sports complex later this month. We've got the inside scoop on the exciting details of this annual event that brings the Reds closer to their devoted fanbase.

Running from January 22 to 27, the weeklong Reds Caravan is a journey spanning from central Kentucky to northwest Ohio, with notable stops at several cities along the way. One highlight for fans in the Miami Valley is the caravan's visit to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, scheduled for the last day of the tour.

This much-anticipated event promises appearances from a star-studded lineup, including current and former Reds players, top minor leaguers, broadcasters, front-office staff, and the iconic mascots. They'll be making appearances at various locations throughout Reds Country, making this caravan a must-attend for baseball enthusiasts of all ages.

Last year marked the triumphant return of the Reds Caravan after a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the kickoff event at Spooky Nook Sports Champion Mill in Hamilton drew an impressive crowd of over 500 fans. Now, with the 2024 season on the horizon, fans at all caravan stops will have the chance to engage in question-and-answer sessions, grab autographs, and get a sneak peek into what lies ahead for the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

The caravan's itinerary includes public events at malls and other destinations, with special appearances at schools in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia. While the specific times for each tour stop are yet to be announced, baseball enthusiasts can expect a chance to connect with their favorite players and get pumped for the upcoming season.

Breaking down the caravan into short geographic tours, the Central Tour kicks off on January 22 at Spooky Nook Sports Champion Mill in Hamilton, followed by the Lawrenceburg Event Center in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, on January 23. The West Tour heads to Evansville and Indianapolis in Indiana on January 24 and 25, while the East Tour visits Charleston and Huntington in West Virginia on January 25 and 26.

For fans in Ohio, the North Tour stops in Columbus on January 26 and Dayton and Lima on January 27. Meanwhile, the South Tour heads to Kentucky, making stops in Louisville on January 26 and Bowling Green and Lexington on January 27.

Hey folks, check this out!
Wildfire Hygge Goods + Home, owned by Sarah Dankhoff, had a killer year in 2023. You'd think she'd be keeping the good times rolling at her High Street gift shop, right? Well, guess what – she's shaking things up!

Dankhoff spilled the beans that the 226 High St. spot will be shutting its doors on Jan. 27. Now, you might be wondering why she's making this move. Turns out, by ditching the High Street joint, she's setting the stage to hit the big leagues at her store on 127 N. Second St., the one that opened its doors a couple of years back.

No more juggling two stores means Dankhoff can ditch the light hours. Starting February, Wildfire's doors will be swinging open with extended hours. Closed on Mondays for photoshoots and rearranging stuff, but open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays.

And for all you bargain hunters out there, mark your calendars! From Jan. 16 until the final closing, Wildfire's High Street shop is the place to be for some killer deals. Discounted goodies galore, just like their epic street sales. This is one change worth keeping an eye on!
