Eaton Avenue between Webster Avenue and Rhea Avenue will be closed to through traffic beginning today at 9am until Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at 5pm.
This closure is necessary to repair underground utilities in advance of the Eaton Avenue resurfacing project. It will occur block by block between Webster and Rhea Avenues during the three week period. The closure will coincide with Hamilton City School District's spring break to lessen the impact.
While we understand the significant negative impact of this closure, this work will get Hamilton one step closer to an improved Eaton Avenue.

"Dreamt" is the only word in the English language that ends with "mt."
The English language is full of idiosyncrasies, and the word "dreamt" is one of them. According to Oxford Dictionaries, "dreamt" (and its variations, such as "undreamt") is the only word in the English language that ends with the letters "mt."
Cats can't taste sweet things because of a genetic defect.
Cats can jump surprisingly high, slip through the tightest spaces, and seemingly have nine lives. But there's one thing they can't do: taste sweet things. According to a 2007 article in Scientific American, unlike other mammals, felines can't taste sweetness due to the fact that they "lack 247 base pairs of the amino acids that make up the DNA of the Tas1r2 gene. As a result, it does not code for the proper protein β¦ and it does not permit cats to taste sweets."
A "jiffy" is about one trillionth of a second.
You've probably said you'll be "back in a jiffy" at least a few times in your life. But what you might not realize is that you made a promise you couldn't keep. According to Dictionary.com, a "jiffy" is an actual unit of timeβand a very short one at that. Sometime during the late 18th or early 19th centuries, scientist Gilbert Newton Lewis defined a jiffy as the amount of time it takes light to travel one centimeter in a vacuum, which is about 33.4 picoseconds or one trillionth of a second. That's a short (and pretty much useless) amount of time indeed!
Unprecedented Tornado Activity Hits Ohio
Ohio finds itself grappling with an alarming surge in tornado activity, a weather phenomenon that has intensified over the past three months. The aftermath of destruction is vivid, notably in Clark County where a tornado wreaked havoc on over 90 residences, and in Logan County, where lives were tragically claimed by a recent tornado.
Traditionally, Ohio has experienced an average of 21 tornadoes annually over the last three decades. However, this year has defied norms with a staggering count of 18 confirmed tornadoes already, signaling a brisk start to the severe weather season.
Brandon Pelonquin, a seasoned warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Wilmington, forewarns that the current tally may escalate further. "We're witnessing a rapid onset to the severe weather season," Pelonquin cautioned. "Analyzing prevalent patterns and forecasts, it appears that the conducive weather dynamics supporting severe weather are poised to persist as we progress into April."
The inclement weather pattern Pelonquin alludes to is a complex interplay of atmospheric systems. According to Jana Houser, an esteemed professor and atmospheric scientist at Ohio State University, the confluence of low-pressure systems and erratic temperatures sets the stage for tornado genesis.
"Critical to the formation of rotating storms and tornadoes is the presence of unstable atmospheric conditions, alongside wind shifts in both velocity and direction throughout the atmosphere," Houser elucidated.
Typically, Ohio witnesses heightened tornado activity during the warmer months of May, June, and July, owing to the requisite warm, moist air and cold air juxtaposition. However, this year's uncharacteristically warm February, ranking as the second warmest on record in Ohio, has provided an anomalous breeding ground for tornadoes.
While Houser refrains from directly attributing this trend to climate change, she speculates on a potential shift in seasonal occurrences, alluding to the possibility of robust weather events materializing earlier in the calendar year.
Furthermore, Houser suggests a geographic shift in tornado prevalence, citing a 2018 study indicating a relocation of the notorious "tornado alley" towards the east. Consequently, states like Ohio in the Upper Midwest and Southeast regions are witnessing a surge in tornado activity, even during the winter months.
With mounting concerns over escalating extreme weather events, Pelonquin stresses the imperative for Ohioans to brace themselves for the onslaught. Beyond tornadoes, residents must prepare for flash floods and extreme temperature fluctuations. In light of this, Pelonquin underscores the necessity for ongoing evaluations to enhance the efficiency of weather alerts and responses.
"Our responsibilities are evolving," Pelonquin emphasized. "We must remain at the forefront of technological advancements and ensure seamless communication with our partners and the public, empowering them with timely warnings and guidance in the face of impending severe weather."
