Animal Friends Humane Society is asking for help
Animal Friends Humane Society in Butler County has been navigating through a series of challenges stemming from fluctuating overcrowding issues over the past few years. Last summer, the shelter faced an influx of dogs following a hoarding case, and more recently, they've had to resort to setting up pop-up kennels and shelters within their facility to accommodate the additional animals.
Megan Poffenbarger, a compassionate voice at the shelter, shared the strain they endure, saying, "There are days when we come in, and we're faced with the task of relocating dogs to different areas. We've had to set up extra kennels in other rooms, and while our staff has adapted to this reality, it's something we wish we didn't have to become accustomed to."
The challenges of overcrowding began in 2020 with the onset of the pandemic and have persisted since. Despite being equipped to house up to 70 adoptable animals, Animal Friends Humane Society often finds itself stretched thin, with even more animals being cared for in foster homes.
"During the pandemic, many people adopted dogs while they were staying at home. However, as they returned to work, the strain on our resources increased," explained Poffenbarger. "Additionally, delays in spaying and neutering services due to closures have compounded the problem."
Now, as communities grapple with financial difficulties, the shelter faces yet another hurdle. Poffenbarger noted that some families, facing economic hardships, have reluctantly surrendered their beloved pets. This, coupled with fewer adoptions due to financial constraints, further exacerbates the shelter's predicament.
"We're struggling to find as many homes for our animals as we used to because our community is under significant financial strain," lamented Poffenbarger.
Amidst these challenges, there are various ways individuals can extend a helping hand beyond monetary contributions. Foster homes offer a crucial lifeline, providing temporary shelter while offering valuable insights into the animals' behavior and temperament.
"In a foster home, we learn important details about the dogs, such as whether they are potty trained, good with kids, or crate trained. These insights are invaluable to potential adopters and provide much-needed respite for the animals," emphasized Poffenbarger.
For those interested in making a difference, whether through fostering or other means, Animal Friends Humane Society offers multiple avenues for support. Details can be found on their website, where information on donations and volunteer opportunities is readily available.
As we navigate these challenging times together, let us remember the unwavering resilience of both the animals and the compassionate individuals dedicated to their well-being. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of these beloved companions.

The first Oscar's acceptance speech in sign language wasn't by Marlee Matlin for "Children of a Lesser God" in 1986 but by Louise Fletcher for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in 1975. She was born to deaf parents and wanted them to hear her speech at home.
We don’t know who invented or held the patent for the fire hydrant as those papers were lost when the US Patent Office…. burned down.🤨
Nissan cars for ads/ racing normally use the number 23 because in Japanese, a 2 is pronounced 'ni' and a 3 is pronounced 'san'.

Womens History Month
How World War II Spurred a Decade of Women’s Pro Baseball
When the United States entered World War II, Franklin D. Roosevelt made it clear that he thought Major League Baseball should continue. But as thousands of minor league players and over 500 major league players—including Joe DiMaggio—left their teams to serve in the military, Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley became concerned about the game’s future. To ensure that baseball (and the revenue he earned from it) would continue, the chewing gum magnate founded what became known as the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1943.
Just as women working in factories was supposed to be temporary, Wrigley thought of the women’s league as another temporary wartime measure. But rather than tapering off, the league’s attendance grew after the war, peaking in 1948 when over 900,000 fans attended that season’s games. By then, the league had expanded from four teams to ten. It continued until 1954, playing a total of 12 seasons showcasing more than 500 players during its run.
