What Is A Leap Year?

Leap years are used to align our calendar with the Earth's orbit around the Sun by adding an extra day, February 29, to February, making the year 366 days long. This adjustment is necessary because a tropical year, the time it takes Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun, is about 365.242189 days, slightly longer than our calendar year of 365 days.

Without leap years, our calendar would gradually become out of sync with the seasons, shifting approximately 24 days over a century. Leap years occur nearly every four years according to specific rules: a year must be divisible by 4 to be a leap year; however, if it can be evenly divided by 100, it is not a leap year unless it is also divisible by 400.

This system, introduced with the Gregorian calendar, improves upon the Julian calendar's simpler method of adding a leap day every four years without exception, thus preventing the calendar from drifting significantly from the tropical year over time. Leap years were first implemented in the Julian calendar by Julius Caesar over 2000 years ago, but the Gregorian calendar later refined the system to better maintain alignment with the Earth's orbit and the seasons.

Dear Concerned Parents and Guardians,

It has come to our attention that there is a serious issue concerning the safety of children's meals currently circulating in the market.

The U.S. Department of Agricultureโ€™s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert regarding trays of fully cooked chicken and spaghetti meals intended for kids.

According to the FSIS, the spaghetti included in these meals contains egg white, a well-known allergen, which has not been properly declared on the product label. This omission poses a significant risk to children who may suffer from egg allergies.

The specific product in question is the 5.9-ounce trays of โ€œnurture life KIDS MEALS CHICKEN PARM WITH SUPER VEGGIE SPAGHETTI,โ€ with โ€œenjoy byโ€ dates ranging from Jan. 9 to March 1. Shockingly, these packages lack USDA marks of inspection, further exacerbating the concern for their safety.

Even more alarming is the distribution method of these meals. They were sold online and shipped directly to consumers, which means they could be present in numerous households across the country.

It is deeply troubling that this issue was only brought to light during an internal audit by the company, rather than being detected through rigorous quality control measures before reaching the market.

As a consumer advocate deeply invested in the welfare of families, we implore anyone who may have these kids' meals in their refrigerators or freezers to refrain from consuming them. Instead, dispose of them immediately and contact the seller for a refund.

For those seeking further information or with questions regarding this alarming alert, we urge you to reach out to Nurture Life Inc. co-founder Jennifer Chow at [email protected] or 312-517-1888.

2024 is a leap year, which means this year there will be a Feb. 29. Here are three fun facts about leap day, including whether Julius Caesar started it and if it always happens every four years.

Roman dictator Julius Caesar introduced leap day.

While anyone can propose to whomever they want, an Irish tradition called โ€œBachelorโ€™s Dayโ€ or โ€œLadiesโ€™ Privilegeโ€ allows women to propose marriage to men on leap day โ€œin a reversal of traditional gender rolesโ€

Leap years typically come every four years, but that is not always the case. In the late 1500s, astronomers realized that the solar year isnโ€™t exactly 365.25 days. This means that three times out of every four hundred years there are eight years between leap years.

St. Ann Church in Hamilton, Ohio, stands as a beacon of faith and architectural splendor, overcoming financial turmoil to become a cherished landmark.

Established in 1908

St. Ann Church is not just a place of worship but a historical landmark that encapsulates Hamilton's rich history and the community's spirit. The church's ability to maintain traditions, such as the use of real candles, amidst modern changes, speaks to its role as a pillar of continuity and faith. As Hamilton's largest neighborhood, Lindenwald, and its manufacturing roots have evolved, St. Ann Church remains a constant, inviting parishioners and visitors to appreciate its beauty and heritage.

Why your property taxes went up, and what to do now

Homeowners in Hamilton, Butler, and Clermont counties are grappling with unexpected spikes in their property tax bills following recent reappraisals that substantially hiked home values. Concerned residents are questioning county officials about the steep increase, especially when some neighborhoods are experiencing decreases. They urge authorities to take action to protect financially strained homeowners from potential foreclosure.

Ohio law mandates County Auditors to reassess all real property every six years, with a triennial update in the third year post-reappraisal. The aim is to ensure fair valuation compared to similar properties and adjust values closer to market rates based on recent sales. Butler County conducted its triennial update in 2023.

If homeowners disagree with their property's assessed value, they can appeal to the Board of Revision by submitting DTE Form 1 by April 1. The form and detailed instructions are accessible on the Auditorโ€™s website:

State funds called โ€˜criticalโ€™ for Boys & Girls Clubs of Hamilton renovation project

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Hamilton were built by local donors in the 1960s and โ€˜70s. Thousands of kids have traveled through the two facilities, which still have wooden backboards and hand cranks to lower and raise them. Our children deserve an upgrade.
