What Is A Leap Year?

Leap years are used to align our calendar with the Earth's orbit around the Sun by adding an extra day, February 29, to February, making the year 366 days long. This adjustment is necessary because a tropical year, the time it takes Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun, is about 365.242189 days, slightly longer than our calendar year of 365 days.

Without leap years, our calendar would gradually become out of sync with the seasons, shifting approximately 24 days over a century. Leap years occur nearly every four years according to specific rules: a year must be divisible by 4 to be a leap year; however, if it can be evenly divided by 100, it is not a leap year unless it is also divisible by 400.

This system, introduced with the Gregorian calendar, improves upon the Julian calendar's simpler method of adding a leap day every four years without exception, thus preventing the calendar from drifting significantly from the tropical year over time. Leap years were first implemented in the Julian calendar by Julius Caesar over 2000 years ago, but the Gregorian calendar later refined the system to better maintain alignment with the Earth's orbit and the seasons.

Mantey Twins Cash In On โ€œI Can See Your Voiceโ€

Hey there, folks! Get ready to double up on the fun because we've got an epic tale of twin triumph for you!

Meet Alvin and Kelvin Mantey, the dynamic duo who just snagged the top prize on a national TV game show! These two Hamilton High School grads turned heads and stole hearts on Fox's I Can See Your Voice, and let me tell you, it was a twin-tastic affair!

Now, picture this: a whole episode dedicated to the magic of twinning! Yep, that means contestants, singers, and even the guest host, all doubling down on the fun. And who stepped up to the plate as host? None other than the hilarious Joel McHale, filling in for the one and only Ken Jeong.

So, what's the game plan? Well, you've got six singers giving it their all in lip-sync battles, while our brave contestants, in this case, the Mantey bros, have to sniff out the bad apples using clever clues. It's a rollercoaster of cash prizes and nail-biting decisions, folks!

But here's where it gets really juicy. With $30,000 already in their pockets, Alvin and Kelvin decided to roll the dice for a chance at the grand prize of $100,000. Talk about nerve-wracking! And guess what? Lady Luck was on their side because when the final duet hit the stage with none other than Michelle Williams from Destiny's Child, it was music to their earsโ€”literally! Cue the tears, the cheers, and the epic victory dance!

In the aftermath of their big win, the Mantey bros are already dreaming big. From snagging their own wheels to lending a hand to their dad's new business venture, these guys are ready to spread the love and the cash.

And hey, let's not forget where it all started. Remember that 2016 feature in the Journal-News? Yep, that's where we got a glimpse into the lives of these Ghana-born, Hamilton-raised twins who've been turning heads since day one. Kelvin said it best back then, "In America, you gotta hustle. But hey, with a bit of effort and a whole lot of heart, anything is possible!"

So here's to Alvin and Kelvin Mantey, the twin sensations who showed us all that when it comes to winning big, two heads are definitely better than one!

State funds called โ€˜criticalโ€™ for Boys & Girls Clubs of Hamilton renovation project

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Hamilton were built by local donors in the 1960s and โ€˜70s. Thousands of kids have traveled through the two facilities, which still have wooden backboards and hand cranks to lower and raise them. Our children deserve an upgrade.
