Meeting Notice - Special Meeting of Board of Today

Attention stakeholders: During the last several weeks, as the flood protection benefits and assessments have been updated with new county property values, and there is a better understanding of projected assessment amounts, we are listening to you and hearing your feedback.

A Special Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Miami Conservancy District will be held today at 4:00 pm, at Hamilton City Hall, 345 High Street, Hamilton, Ohio. It is anticipated the Board of Directors will enter executive session immediately for the purpose of consultation with legal counsel concerning disputes involving the public body that are the subject of pending or imminent court action. The anticipated executive session should adjourn at 5:00 pm. At that time, the Board of Directors will resume open session of the Special Meeting for the purpose of matters related to flood protection benefits.

"It's certainly hopeful and we all appreciate the good news of the direction this seems to be going," said the organizer of the group Keep Hamilton Afloat created to oppose the MCD's latest reassessment. "But to be clear, we want much more than a pause. We want a new promise made, not so much unlike that edict made 100 years ago, but this time a promise to protect the people from both financial ruination and, as well as rising flood waters."

Elected officials, judges, attorneys, and court employees from Butler County came together on Wednesday afternoon for a special gathering to pay tribute to Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy, a former Hamilton police officer and county domestic relations judge.

The occasion marked a significant moment in the annual Law Day commemoration, held every May 1st to celebrate the fundamental importance of the rule of law and to foster a deeper appreciation of our legal system, as highlighted by the American Bar Association.

Reflecting on Justice Kennedy's journey, Melynda Cook Howard, president of the Butler County Bar Association, expressed profound admiration, stating, "Who could have imagined that Butler County would be home to such a distinguished jurist? It is truly remarkable to witness her transformation from a Hamilton police officer to the foremost female figure in law enforcement."

Cook Howard further emphasized the significance of revitalizing the Law Day celebration, noting that there could be no better way to honor the occasion than by celebrating the accomplishments of Sharon Kennedy.

Justice Kennedy's roots in Colerain Township, just a stone's throw away from Fairfield, laid the foundation for her remarkable career. From her formative years at Northwest High School to earning a bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Cincinnati in 1984 and eventually graduating from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1991, her journey exemplifies dedication and perseverance.

Having patrolled the streets of Hamilton and navigated the complexities of the courtroom as a law clerk, defense attorney, and county domestic relations judge in Butler County, Justice Kennedy's ascent to the state's highest court as associate justice in 2012 is a testament to her unwavering commitment to justice.

Touched by the heartfelt ceremony, Justice Kennedy wiped away tears as she beheld the plaque that will adorn the lobby of the Butler County court wing, symbolizing her enduring legacy.

In her gracious remarks, Justice Kennedy expressed her profound gratitude, stating, "It is truly an honor to stand before you today, and I am deeply humbled by the recognition from the Butler County Bar Association. This day of acknowledgment is not merely a reflection of my individual achievements but a tribute to the extraordinary community that has supported me in realizing my fullest potential."

NATIONWIDE RECALL: Ground beef sold at Walmart has possible E. coli contamination

Dear Hamilton Thrivers,

We wish to inform you that a recent recall has been initiated for certain raw ground beef products sold at Walmart stores across the nation due to potential E. coli contamination. The recall, announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, affects more than 16,000 pounds of raw ground beef.

The affected products were produced on April 26 and 27 and include various types of ground beef items packaged in plastic-wrapped trays. These products bear specific lot codes and establishment numbers, as detailed below:

  • 2.25-pound trays of "93% Lean 7% Fat All Natural Lean Ground Beef" with lot code 117 and establishment number “EST. 86P”

  • 1.33-pound trays of four "Prime Rib Beef Steak Burgers Patties" with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P”

  • 2.25-pound trays of "85% Lean 15% Fat All Natural Angus Premium Ground Beef" with lot code 117 and establishment number “EST. 86P”

  • 2.25-pound trays of "80% Lean 20% Fat All Natural Ground Beef Chuck" with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P”

  • 1.33-pound trays of four "80% Lean 20% Fat All Natural Ground Beef Chuck Patties" with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P”

  • 1.33-pound trays of four "90% Lean 10% Fat All Natural Ground Beef Sirloin Patties" with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P”

The issue was reported by Cargill Meat Solutions of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, after it was discovered that previously segregated product had been inadvertently utilized in the production of ground beef shipped to Walmart locations nationwide.

While there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of the recalled beef products, we advise anyone who may be concerned about their health to seek guidance from a healthcare provider.

E. coli is a bacterium that can lead to severe symptoms such as dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms typically manifest between two and eight days after exposure. While most individuals recover within a week, some may develop a serious complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome, characterized by symptoms like easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. It is essential to seek immediate medical attention if experiencing these symptoms.

If you have purchased the recalled beef products dispose of the items or return them to Walmart.

Furthermore, we remind all consumers to handle and prepare raw meat products safely, whether fresh or frozen, and to ensure that ground beef is cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The use of a food thermometer is recommended to accurately gauge the temperature and ensure thorough cooking.

For any inquiries regarding the recall, consumers may contact Cargill Meat Solutions at 844-419-1574.
