Lakota West beats Fairfield in holiday hoops action
In a riveting display of resilience and strategic prowess, Lakota West's boys basketball team, guided by first-year head coach Kelven Moss, is carving out its distinctive identity on the court. This promising evolution was evident on Thursday night at Xavier University's Cintas Center during the LaRosa's Holiday Hardwood Classic.
Contrastingly, Fairfield finds itself grappling with a challenging start to the season, struggling to piece together a cohesive game plan in what appears to be a sluggish beginning. Lakota West seized the opportunity to capitalize on this dynamic, securing a hard-fought 63-56 victory over the Fairfield Indians.
Key contributors to the Firebirds' success included Isaiah Meade-Moss, LJ Green, and Josh Tyson, each tallying 11 points. The team's prowess from the free-throw line, particularly in the crucial fourth quarter, proved instrumental in sealing the victory, with a notable 12-of-14 conversion rate.
Coach Moss acknowledged the team's earlier struggles from the charity stripe, emphasizing their focused efforts to address this aspect of their game. "That was one of our struggles early on in the season," Moss commented. "We've been really locked in between each drill — free throws, free throws. We try to have the right lineup in to finish off games."
Lakota West rebounded impressively from a recent setback, overturning a 76-70 loss to Beavercreek on Wednesday. The win against Fairfield marked their second triumph in the last three games, breaking a three-game losing streak against their opponents.
Isaiah Meade-Moss, named Thursday's Player of the Game, highlighted the team's resilience, stating, "We came off a tough loss, and we just wanted to flip the switch fast. We didn't want to dwell on that too long."
On the other side of the court, Fairfield finds itself mired in a challenging four-game losing streak, currently holding a 1-7 record. Despite boasting talent, the team is grappling with cohesion and struggles to connect when faced with adversity, as articulated by Coach DJ Wyrick.
"We're obviously way too talented to be 1-7," Wyrick remarked. "The schedule is tough — but that's not why we're 1-7 by any means. ... We're good when things are going well. We look really good. But when things get tough, and we have to come together, we're not connected enough to do that."
The game itself saw Fairfield leading 14-10 after the first quarter, only for Lakota West to stage a comeback with an 8-0 run, taking a 16-14 lead. The teams entered halftime deadlocked at 24-24. Lakota West's Bryce Curry provided a highlight with an alley-oop dunk, propelling the Firebirds to a 36-29 advantage in the third quarter.
Coach Moss reflected on the team's performance, acknowledging the pressure they faced but expressing satisfaction with their GMC win. Lakota West now holds a 3-2 conference record, securing a second-place position in a competitive league.
As both teams look ahead, the focus shifts to the Butler County Backyard Bash at Fairfield Arena on Saturday. Lakota West is slated to face Mount Healthy at 4:30 p.m., while Fairfield takes on Ross with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. The upcoming clashes will undoubtedly add another chapter to the evolving narratives of these two teams in the high-stakes arena of high school basketball.
